Road trip: May 23, 2026, Victoria BC
The day was perfect. We set out at noon on a slightly overcast Saturday. It is about a two-hour drive from Nanaimo to Victoria and so we arrived just before 2 pm.
Springtime on this part of the island is a feast for the eyes – the color of the sky, water, trees, and distant mountains are the backdrop for vivid colored flowers everywhere. And when the wind picks up you can be sure to find many enjoying the waves.

When Wind Meets Water

We passed thru Beacon Hill Park and came out along Dallas Road. The wind picked up and as we stopped to take in the ocean view we were pleasantly surprised to find Kite Surfers! Then we also discovered what I now know to be Wing Foils and ParaWing Foils. Windsurfing sure has changed since my days as a kid on Lake Erie in the 70’s and 80’s! Lucky for me, many of the kite surfers noticed my big camera up on the bluff and they started to make their daring leaps into the air right in front of us! What a joy to photograph and so much fun to watch! Here are some of my favourite shots. (Too many as always but how does one choose!)
Captured by the shutter!

When You Leave the Planned Route
On our way out of Victoria we drove along Beach Drive and wound through Oak Bay following the coast of the ocean. Our time here was so wonderful that we decided it wasn’t quite time to call it a day – so we took an unplanned detour off the drive and landed up on Queenswood Drive. It was the best choice! If you enjoy admiring beautifully landscaped properties – this is the place to see.

You open new opportunities for seeing the unexpected.
How to Find It
Clover Point Park and Spiral Beach are along the Dallas Road coastline.
