Trudie and I took advantage of the warm and sunny day, and headed out toward Comox in search of any herring spawn activity.
We stopped in at the French Creek Estuary when we heard that you could see sea lions there – and they were there, but it was too difficult a terrain to get close enough for photos. Trudie just had a knee replacement 5 months ago and so we are still testing out her limitations.
Anyway, you could really hear the sea lions barking! I have wanted to get a close up of a sea lion since moving to the island 5 years ago – and I was really hoping that today would be the day!
But, the terrain was just too difficult and the wind was so cold – so we decided to carry on to Comox.
As we drove on (Hwy 19A) Trudie decided to check out Deep Bay – she gets notifications from a Facebook Group in Comox that sends out messages when there are wildlife sightings – and she had just heard that there were sea lions on the beach in Deep Bay.
We turned off the highway into Deep Bay.
There were not many people at the beach – there were a few photographers – us included.
People sat quietly; within just a few feet of these magnificent creatures that lined the beach. They were not only on the beach, they were in the water, you could hear them for miles. The fishing boats were out in the distance – all creatures now are waiting now for the herring spawn that is about to happen. It is time of feast for them.
